Sandeep Special School

Our mission

In India, people with disabilities are still often regarded as inferior and socially excluded. Many families are ashamed and hide or violate their children. In the rural region around Sullia, many parents work as day-care workers on rubber plantations and cannot provide their children adequately – the more urgent these children need reliable care, education and therapy.

On site

Since 2000, the Sadashiv couple has been dedicated to accompanying and promoting children and young people with disabilities.

In order to secure their valuable work in the long term, we have established the Sandeep Special School in Sullia, near Mangaluru (Karnataka). Since then, the new school building has been offering a safe learning and funding location for girls and boys who would hardly receive support elsewhere.

With this new building we have created a stable foundation so that this important work can be continued in dignified and child-friendly spaces.

History

2013 - 2019

The married couple Sadashiv becomes our project partner, and Hand des Menschen Since then, the school has supported donations and sponsorships. After the 2014 decision to build an own school, the project is delayed by statutory hurdles, until 2017 the necessary FCRA certificate is available. Since the original property is not available, the 2018 construction plan is adjusted, and in 2019 the rapid construction of the school begins.

2019 - 2023

The Covid-19-Pandemie has to interrupt school building in 2020, but can be continued slowly at the end of the year. In 2021, the construction continues to be delayed due to material shortages and labour shortages, while the lessons are repeatedly exposed by lockdowns and teachers teach the children at home. In the middle of the year, school education can be started in the new premises, while at the same time the last smaller works are carried out.

2023 - today

On February 12 it is now ready: The school is opened and inaugurated as part of a solemn ceremony! In addition to the official program with speeches and schooling, where almost 1,000 guests attend, there are dance performances and singing of school children, as well as a feast with all present. All in all a very big and colorful festival!

In addition to basic education, they also receive physiotherapy and support in expressing their needs and becoming more independent in everyday life. A particularly beautiful sign of effect: A former student teaches herself at school today.
